This portfolio examines and explores the theme of agency in visual art and considers the means through which mark-making is achieved. Taking drawing as the most immediate form of mark-making, the following pieces consider how the action of applying mark to a ground can be manipulated to explore concerns of chance, intention and indeterminacy.
By devising and adapting new and existing systems and strategies of mark-making, the following pieces employ and harness various means of movement, force and agency to create intimate and sensitive transcriptions.

The accompanying short film documents the theme of agency in the Tree drawing series of works. Transcribing the shape, direction and duration of movement of a Scots Pine branch manipulated by natural forces of wind.
The video was filmed in Weeford, Staffordshire, UK in early Spring ‘20. The mark transcribed in the film contributes to a larger piece under construction.
