Drawing Approaches ‘18 -
Taking drawing as the most immediate form of mark-making, the following pieces consider how the action of applying mark to a ground can be manipulated to explore concerns of chance, intention, spontaneity and improvisation. By devising and adapting new and existing systems and strategies of mark-making, the following pieces employ and harness various means of movement, force and agency to create new transcriptions.
Conducted in an abstract mode, that the physical means and language of the art form is not directed towards the representation of the visible world (the conscious exclusion of these otherwise legitimate concerns) enables the pieces to concentrate on the formal elements of the medium: shape, line, pattern, texture, tone, gesture, etc.
