Paint Splattered Stool (2021)
Paint Splattered Stool (2021) is a sound work accompanying a found object; 'Paint Splattered Stool' displaying residues of painting.
The stool was in a painting studio occupied by many different art students over many years. During its repeated use over time, the seat accumulated layers of paint splatters, drips of paint, and marks created by the repeated setting down of wet brushes. The discovery of this studio artefact, and considerations of the accidental, indeterminate nature of the marks adorning its surface, would prove to be the starting point for my PhD research exploring indeterminacy within visual and sonic contexts.
The sonic work; Paint Splattered Stool (2021), expresses the concept of the found object in sound. The sound work captures the incidental sonic residuals of determinate acts of typing, drawing and painting. The piece consists of a gradual overlaying and accretion of sounds captured on a studio table during a 30-minute period. The piece results in a complex interweaving of layers, replicating in sound the web of paint splatters acted upon the surface of the found object - Paint Splattered Stool.
