Framed Mark (2021)

Framed Mark was a site-specific work highlighting a section of the gallery wall at the time of the exhibition.

The piece references John Cage’s silent composition, 4’:33” (1952), which consists of the absence of performed music, enabling the audience to experience the ‘silence’ of the ambient environment. As 4’:33” acts as a temporal framing device for whatever sounds occur within its performed environment, Framed Mark, reveals the gallery wall and the ‘silence’ behind the picture frame. The

work frames whatever visual incidentals may appear within its boundary and invites viewers to consider them for what they are.

Framed Mark is accompanied by a sample sound capturing the noise of a scratch on the surface of a blank vinyl. By recording the sound of this scratch, the sample sound emphasises the principle of a surface with an accidental mark becoming part of the phenomena of that surface, generating an auditory equivalent of Framed Mark.
